O secretário-geral das Nações Unidas, Ban Ki-moon, anunciou nesta sexta-feira (17) a nomeação do general de divisão brasileiro Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz como comandante da Força militar da Missão das Nações Unidas de Estabilização na República Democrática do Congo (MONUSCO).

Santos Cruz vai substituir o general de divisão indiano Chander Prakash Wadhwa, cujo mandato foi concluído em 31 de março. Ban está agradecido pela dedicação e eficácia em seus dois anos de comando na MONUSCO.

Santos Cruz possui mais de 40 anos de experiência militar nacional e internacional. Antes da nomeação, ele era assessor especial do ministro da Secretaria de Assuntos Estratégicos da Presidência da República. Foi vice-chefe do Comando de Operações Terrestres do Exército de abril de 2011 a março de 2013 e comandante da II Divisão do Exército de 2009 a 2011. O general também foi comandante militar da Missão das Nações Unidas para a Estabilização no Haiti (MINUSTAH) de janeiro de 2007 a abril de 2009.

Ele é bacharel em Engenharia Civil pela Universidade Católica de Campinas e graduado na Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras.

Nascido em 1952, Santos Cruz é casado e tem três filhos.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today the appointment of Lieutenant General Carlos Alberto Dos Santos Cruz of Brazil as the Force Commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

Lieutenant General Santos Cruz succeeds Lieutenant General Chander Prakash Wadhwa of India, who completed his assignment on 31 March 2013. The Secretary-General is grateful for his dedicated and effective service during his tenure of over two years in MONUSCO.

Lieutenant General Santos Cruz brings with him over 40 years of national and international military experience, as well as command and staff experience. Before his appointment, he served as Special Adviser to the Minister of the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs within the Presidency of Brazil. Previously, he was the Deputy Commander for Land Operations of the Brazilian Army, from April 2011 to March 2013, and the Division Commander between 2009 and 2011. Lieutenant General Santos Cruz also served as Force Commander in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) from January 2007 to April 2009.

Lieutenant General Santos Cruz has a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from the Catholic University of Campinas, Brazil, and is a graduate of the Military Academy of Agulhas Negras in Resende, Brazil.

Born in Brazil in 1952, Lieutenant General Santos Cruz is married and has three children.
